SISTERS IN ISLAM: DO THEY AGAINST THE ISLAMIC PRINCIPLES?

The challenge of Islamic faith is becoming crucial recently. It has been argued that there are many of ideologies that claim to spread the real teaching of Islam and struggle to enhance the Islamic way of life in accordance to the contemporary situation. Most of them are influenced from the ideology which is rooted in the west such as Secularism, Liberalism and Humanism. Feminism is one of the ideologies in which its principles closely related to Liberalism, specifically in fighting for the equality of gender. According to Dr. Haji Muhammad Nur Manuty & Prof Madya Mohd Kamil Majid (2007) highlighted that, the ideology of Liberalism has a big impact to the Islamic faith and affect the status of Islam as the official religion in Malaysia. One of the Liberal Islam network in Malaysia is Sisters in Islam. SIS is struggling for the equality of gender. Their mission is much associated with the ideology of Feminism which is rooted in the Western. Perhaps, the ideology of Liberal Islam is becoming widely spread in our country. It is dangerous threat to the Islamic teaching.
Dr.Ugi Suharto (2007) explained that,” the history of feminist movement, Sisters in Islam in Malaysia was established by Amina Wadud and now developed by those educated women”(p.31). As mentioned in the online article (n.d) stated that, Sisters in Islam was formed in 1988 and registered as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in 1993 under the name SIS Forum (Malaysia) Berhad. The name Sisters in Islam is retained as an authorship name. Thus, we can see that, there was a long time ago the movement was established. Most of the members in Sisters in Islam were western educational background. They used to interpret the verses in the Qur’an and the Hadith according to their own understanding.
Masjaliza Hamzah (n.d), stated that:

Our mission is to promote an awareness of the true principles of Islam,
principle that enshrine the concept of equality between women and men,
and to strive towards creating a society that upholds the Islamic principles
of equality, justice, freedom and dignity within a democratic state.

Hence, their mission is declared by upholding the real Islamic principles. Do they really manage to understand the true meaning of Islamic principles?. If yes, but why there are still many arguments have been forwarded to them.
It has been argued that, Sisters in Islam is related to Liberal Islam, but it was denied by SIS Project Manager, Norhayati Kaprawi asserted that, whether it is a liberal or not liberal is mere view of certain people. In fact, the word of liberal is good. It is a fact that, its motivate us to be open-minded and attempt to search the reality of life today (Nor imamah Seman, 2009). Therefore, SIS will stay firmly believe with their stand. It is important to us to know what Sisters in Islam is all about. The issue of gender is a serious problem. We can not make it a simple thing because it is related to our religion dignity and in understanding the Divine sources is not simply as they made. While some may disagree, it is firmly believed that Sisters in Islam is against the Islamic principles especially in the issues of reforming the Islamic Family Law, the decision making of fatwa and the wearing of a hijab is an individual freedom.
